These can be ideas for open house activities, classes, events, collaborations, social stuff, whatever.

  • node.js Internet Of Things: (Pez) Been working on using a BeagleBone, NimBots and node-js (especially node-xmpp) to implement an Internet Of Things Platform
  • Acoustic Camera: (Dave S.) Some members have been discussing the idea of building an acoustic camera. The images would be coarse but the idea of seeing the world as illuminated by sound is captivating. Preliminary software has been demonstrated using simulated data.
  • Hacking the Commercial 3D Printer: There's a huge, commercial 3D printer in the space that we've been using as a glorified storage cabinet for the past 2 years. The goal is to make this printer usable, if possible using open source hardware and software. (Update: the commercial 3D printer is no longer in the space.)
  • The Practical Multimeter: Everyday uses for multimeters, like this. Examples: Find out if a wall plug is bad, see if household batteries have charge, test the alternator in a car, test audio cables to see if they're busted. Bonus: An easy way to test the polarity of a speaker.

    • Here's an even more bizarre variant. What if you could hook up with puppeteers and make remote puppets (e.g. a puppet in Chicago being operated by a person in Philly). What if you had the puppets interact with a person doing a story slam. Oddly enough, Philly is probably the center of the puppetry universe in the U.S. and one of the guys on the FPA board is heavily involved in puppetry. It really *is* a small world ...
